| Swedish-speaking and writing Finnish author and artist Tove Jansson (1914-2001) created the world of the Moomintrolls and their friends out of whole cloth. A Moomintroll, small and shy, chubby but cheerful, came into existence in the mid-1940s. In her books, Jansson wrote for children, so her hero is quite young. The very first Moomintroll tale tells of how he and his Moominmamma set out into the dense forests of Finland (soon to be renamed Moominvalley) to look for his missing Moominpappa. Jansson's books have been translated into 34 different languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide. She drew the Moomin newspaper comic strip from 1953 to 1959, which was subsequently continued by her brother. These "ramp walker" toy collectibles will, with a gentle push, march when placed on any slightly inclined smooth surface. No costly batteries, no wind-up mechanism to overwind. From St. Petersburg, Russia. Durable molded plastic. 5" tall. |
