The Fisherman and the Goldfish Ornament
From a tale by
Alexander Pushkin. One day, a magic goldfish is caught in an old man's
fishing net. The fish asks to be put back into the sea in exchange for a
ransom. The kindly fisherman agrees to return the fish, but does not
accept the ransom. However, upon returning to his shack, the fisherman's
wife demands the ransom and slowly becomes very greedy. She first demands a new washtub, then a new home, then she demands to become a
fine lady, and then to become the Tsaritsa - rular of all the land. When finally she demands that
the goldfish become her servant, the fish, with a mere swish of its
tail, returns the couple to their original state of poverty.
