The Fisherman and the Goldfish Ornament
From a tale by
Alexander Pushkin. One day, a magic goldfish is caught in the old man's
fishing net. The fish asks to be put back into the sea in exchange for a
ransom. The kindly fisherman agrees to return the fish, but does not
accept the ransom. However, upon returning to his shack, the fisherman's
wife becomes greedy. She demands a new washtub, a new home, to become a
fine lady, and finally, to become the Tsaritsa. When she demands that
the goldfish become her servant, the fish merely, with a swish of his
tail, returns the couple to their original state of poverty.
