(Bogomater Kurskaya Korennaya) Sterling Silver Icon Pendant The Russian Shop / Maison Russe 800-778-9404
Found in the 13th century in a forest near a tree (hence the appellation "root") this justifiably important Russian icon of the Theotokos of the Sign was immediately preserved in the Black Hermitage of the Roots (Chornaya Korennaya Pustyn), an abbey founded on the spot of its discovery. The design is high relief and depicts the central image of the icon, that of the Virgn with a smaller image of the Jesus Christ sitting upon her knees and centered in a round shield. It depicts the Theotokos during the Annunciation at the moment of saying, "May it be done to me according to your word." The Virgin of the Sign refers to the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14: "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel". Around the perimeter of the pendant is the inscription: "Miracle Working Icon of the Virgin of the Sign - Blessed Mother of God of Kursk". On the back in Russian is the prayer: "Save and Protect" in Russian. About 1/2" diameter (though oval). Also available with a fine quality 20" silver chain. Choose using dropdown menu below.
