Interest in Russian items probably peaked in the late 1980's and early 1990's when there was so much good news coming out of the region, Shukin says. "Although interest in Russian decorative arts has declined a bit since then, mine is a politically driven business. Interest in our items goes up every time an American president meets with a Russian leader and the news is good. And even when there is no meeting, we have a very consistent, healthy demand."
Between 1988 and 1993, the Bradford Exchange, a firm which issues decorative plates and facilitates sales of existing plates between collectors, issued a number of limited edition Russian series, many based on legends and fairy tales which abound in Russia.
