"Assuage My Sorrows". This icon is a wonder-working icon installed in the Church of St. Nikolaev Odrin Monastery in Karachev (Orlov province). The Mother of God (of the Hodigitrea type) is depicted with Her left hand against Her head which suggests that She listens to the prayers of all the faithful who appeal to her with their needs and their sorrows. Christ is holding and displaying a scroll with the prayer: "Judge righteously; each show mercy to one another; do not offend widows and orphans, and do not keep malice in your heart towards your brother."

This icon was found in Moscow, in the church of St. Nicholas across the Moscow river, where it was brought by the Cossacks in 1640. Under Tsar Michael Fyodorovitch (1613-1645), it helped defeat many enemies in battle.

Icon with stand measures 9". Painted on wood and signed by the artist at Sergiev-Posad, 2011. Matching wooden egg stand, gold cross on the back.
