A Short History.
Yuryev-Polsky is the administrative center the District of Vladimir Oblast, Russia, located in the upper reaches of the
Koloksha River. Yuryev-Polsky was founded by Yuri (Patron saint, St.
George) Dolgoruky in 1152. "Polsky" means "in the fields". Prince
Sviatoslav personally designed the Cathedral of St. George (1230-1234).
It is pre-Mongol invasion construction and the model for the first stone
churches in Moscow's Kremlin. In the 1460s, the Cathedral's dome
collapsed, destroying most of the unique sculptures which had adorned
the Cathedral walls. It was restored (though hastily) by a well-known
Muscovite artisan, Vasili Yermolin, in 1471.
St. George Cathedral today.
