The icon "The Virgin Vzygranie Mladentsa" or "Mother of God Kardiotissa" is an iconographic type of the "Affectionately Kissing' or Glykophiloussa. Icons of this type have been found as early as the 13th century in Greece and Macedonia. In Russia, this icon appeared around the 16th-17th century. "Vzygranie" is a difficult word to translate. It is rooted in the Russian word "to play". The Mother of God presses Her cheek to the Infant Christ, who playfully and lovingly embraces Her. His head is thrown back and He wears short sleeved clothing. The word "Kardiotissa" means, of course, "from the heart".

Icon with stand measures 10 1/4". Painted on wood and signed by the artist at Sergiev-Posad, 2011. Matching wooden egg stand, gold cross on the back.
