Angels are defined as bodiless beings created before the physical universe. The English word "angel" comes from the Greek word "angelos", which means "messenger." Angels are purely spirits and their service to the human race is to convey the message of God. Angels are organized into several orders of power. On the nature of angels' wings, Saint John Chrysostom explains: "They manifest... sublimity.... Not that angels have wings, but that you may know that they leave the heights and the most elevated dwelling to approach human nature. Accordingly, the wings attributed to these powers have no other meaning than to indicate the sublimity of their nature." Beautiful winged angel with hands clasped in prayer and holding a brocade cloth band. Hand decorated and carved in Russia. 7" tall. Angels Depiction of the Birth of Christ |
