Theotokos of Tolga |
with Metal Covers
The Russian Shop / Maison Russe
In a Russian Orthodox Christian home, one corner, traditionally called the "beautiful" or "holy corner," is reserved for the display of holy images. It is there, that an icon is centered and draped with a colorful embroidered cloth. It is then graced with a lampada (vigil lamp) burning before it. An analoy, or icon stand, would support a small icon, a bible, or a cross.* These elegant and beautiful icons have metal covers, known as an "oklad" or "riza", terms which mean vestments. The metal is silver-plate on copper and the workmanship is known as "repousese", or high relief decoration. To see the fine craftsmanship of these hand made icons, please click here to see the details on the icon pictured at left. Click on images for further information. NOTE: Only 1 of each icon shown is available. |
