Virgin of Vladimir

The Theotokos of Vladimir (Vladimirskaya) is a well-known Orthodox icon of the Eleusa type, which means Tenderness in Greek (Umileniye in Russian.) The term Virgin of Vladimir is shorthand for this icon type, as She is also known as the Mother of God of Tenderness. The relationship between Mother and Child is expressed with great emphasis. Christ, as a child, touches his Mother's face with one hand and presses His cheek against Hers. Her sorrowful gaze foresees the Passion and She embraces Him affectionately and maternally. 2" x 1 1/2". #IC-VL

Strastnaya Mother of God
Mother of God of the Passion

This icon is also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help. To the left and the right of the Mother of God are angels carrying the holy implements of the Lord's suffering: the Cross, the lance, and the sponge, which He recognizes in a calm manner. In the upper left corner is the Archangel Michael carrying a 3-bar cross. In the upper right is the Archangel Gabriel carrying the lance and sponge. The instruments are symbolic of victory over sin. The Mother of God is crowned, and the Child Jesus anticipates His ultimate fate. 2" x 1 1/2". #IC-PS1

The Holy Face

St. Sergius of Radonezh.

St. Sergius of Radonezh, was a leading figure in the church and public life in 14th century Russia and founder of the Trinity Monastery, at Sergeiv Posad near Moscow, one of the most important centers of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is depicted in the background. This icon is reminiscent of "Lives of" icons which were quite popular. They combined important aspects: contact through prayer and the veneration of the image and the opportunity to better understand the life of the saint.
