Our Lady of Smolensk.

The Hodegetria ("Putevoditel'nitsa", or "She Who Guides the Way") type of icon depicting the Mother of God is an ancient sacred image. After the fall of Constantinople, the original Hodegetria, attributed to St. Luke, surfaced in Russia, where it was placed in the Assumption Cathedral of Smolensk. It was brought to Moscow, where the Novodevichy Convent was built in her honour. The original miracle-working icon, dated by art historians to the 11th century, was destroyed by fire during WWII. A great number of churches all over Russia are dedicated to the Smolensk Hodegetria and a certain number of "sister-icons" exist as well. The Smolensk Mother of God is one of the most venerated icons in Russian Orthodoxy.
Painted on wood, finished with a clear lacquer. Gold details and gold halo. Back reinforced in the corners to prevent warping. From Russia. 6"x7". [#IC-THSM1.]

$375. 1 only.
