Compiled from the papers of Charles Sydney Gibbes. J. C. Trewin (editor). The House of Special Purpose. An Intimate Portrait of the Last Days of the Russian Imperial Family. Charles Gibbes (1876-1963) was the English tutor to the children of Nicholas II from 1908. When the Imperial Family was taken captive by the Bolshevik revolutionaries, Gibbes shared their exile, recording what he saw in his notebooks and taking hundreds of photographs. This is an eyewitness description of the last years and final days of the ill-fated Romanovs. Gibbes eventually entered the priesthood of the Russian Orthodox faith and rose to the rank of Archimandrite.
