Uncommon color, made in USSR The Russian Shop / Maison Russe 800-778-9404
Viatka "Purple" Maidens. These traditional Russian dolls have an uncommon trait: the first, or head, doll is painted purple. About 20 years ago, as we sifted through the large wood crates in which these dolls were imported, we discovered, that for every 15 traditional yellow and red head dolls, one would be purple. We wondered why this color was so uncommon. And to be quite honest, we still don't have a definitive answer. Our guess is that the color purple, which seldom occurs in nature, was reserved for just a few of the dolls, or perhaps only a few of the painters were given this color to use. It might also have to do with the fact that purple is, in many ways, a royal color. In any case, the purple variation makes an interesting collectible for the nesting doll fan. Note: it is only the first doll which is purple, the inner dolls will vary. USSR label, made in the late 1980s. 7 nest, 6" to 1 1/2". Back to Index Traditional Dolls |
