Katya and the Malachite Treasure Chest. In one of the stories from the famous collection of interlocking tales by Pavel Bazhov (1879-1950), Stepan, a young miner, meets the legendary magical Queen of the Ural Mountains. She begs him to tell his overseer to refrain from plundering the vast mineral resources. He does this, and is sorely reprimanded. The Queen, now having fallen in love with Stepan, asks him to marry her, but he refuses, as he is engaged to the beautiful Anastasia. The Queen, as a parting gift, presents him with a carved malachite box, and, after crying pure emerald tears, she transforms into a lizard and departs forever. The scene painted on the box features the daughter of Stepan and Anastasia, Tanyushka, who closely resembles the Queen. Tanyushka opens the box and marvels at the precious Ural stones that have been stored inside.
