From the Russian bylina (epic tale) Sadko. Sadko, a poor
musician whose talents are unappreciated, makes a bargain with Tsar
Morskoi, King of the Sea. Sadko becomes rich, but neglects the Ocean
Tsar. In the end,
Sadko returns to the banks of Lake Ilmen with his lost time restored. Egg tempera,
lacquer, gold. Intricate free-hand border on papier-mache.
