The name Michael means "like unto God". Here he wears, not his traditional red, but blue and white garments, and holds a spear in his right hand. His wings are prominent and he bears a translucent globe, a symbol of God, Whom he serves. Inside the globe is an image of a baby in swaddling clothes, which represents the soul. This icon was formed in the belief that Archangel Michael takes the souls of the dead with the Guardian Angel.
