(Cupid in Latin) was the son of Aphrodite (Venus), who was the goddess
of love and beauty, and Hermes (Mercury), who had many roles, including
god of shepherds and travelers. Psyche, a mortal, was the youngest
daughter of a powerful king and queen, and whose beauty was compared to
that of Aphrodite. When she commanded Eros to find Psyche the most
unpleasant suitor, it was Eros who fell in love with Psyche. In the end,
Psyche withstands the trials put upon her by Aprhrodite and becomes one
of the immortals. The love of Eros and Psyche is legendary and is the
basis for the folktale "Beauty and the Beast". Hinged divided card case
