The Story of the Silver Platter and The Ripe Apple
By I. L. Kalugina. Kholui, 2005.

A not-so-well-known Russian tale (retold by A. Tolstoy) which recasts the traditional Cinderella fairy tale motif of three beautiful daughters. The two eldest are lazy and vain, and the youngest, Alyonushka, is the hardest working and most humble. For this she is rewarded by her parents with the most love and envied for this by her sisters. The story progresses via county fairs, an old woman with connections to the primeval forest, mystical platters, incantations and ripe red apples, evil deeds, a handsome shepherd and culminates in a magical ending.
