     Ludmila, the daughter of Prince Vladimir of Kiev, accepts the wedding proposal of the brave knight Ruslan . Nearby stand three soldiers. Ruslan and Ludmila, a poem by Alexander Pushkin, was first published in 1820. It is an epic fairy tale that tells the story of the abduction of Ludmila by Chernomor, an evil wizard, and the attempts of Ruslan to rescue her.

Egg tempera, lacquer, gold paint. Detailed freehand border surrounds the painting. Hinged papier-mache box with rounded corners. 5" x 3" x 1".
