Ruslan and Ludmila is epic fairy tale consisting of eight parts by Alexander Pushkin, published in 1820. It tells the story of the kidnapping of Ludmila, the daughter of Prince Vladimir of Kiev, by an evil wizard, Chernomor, and the attempt by the brave knight Ruslan to find and rescue her. Painted on the first doll is one of the most dramatic scenes of this story, that of the giant slumbering head, once a mighty warrior and the brother of the wizard. Ruslan obtains a powerful sword from beneath the head and pledges to use it to defeat Chernomor. On the second doll we see Ruslan flying over the countryside on his golden horse and the newly obtained sword. On the third doll we see Ludmila trying on the wizard's magical hat with which she can vanish and reappear at will by varying its position on her head. The fourth doll depicts the wizard himself with his long beard, through which he derives his power and magic. The fifth doll shows the storyteller, who yearns for days gone by. Smaller and smaller dolls - ten in all - show a castle, a table with a feast, a small bush, a pitcher and a tiny maiden (the last one). Excellent condition, brightly painted and finished with glossy polished lacquer. A true one-of-a-kind doll.
From Sergiev-Posad, 1992. Signed and dated by the artist, L.Kozlova. 9" down to tiny.
