The state coat-of-arms of Ukraine is the Tryzub (or Trident) and its history is more than 1000 years old. It is the symbol of the Rurik Family Dynasty. The Rurik Dynasty or Rurikids were the ruling dynasty of Kievan Rus' after 862 and the successor principalities of Galicia-Volhynia (after 1199), Chernigov, Vladimir-Suzdal, and the Grand Duchy of Moscow, as well as the founders of the Tsardom of Russia. The founder of the Rurik dynasty was Rurik, who was a Varangian (Varyag), or Viking, prince. The Tryzub was stamped onto precious metal coins issued by Prince Vladimir the Great (980-1015), who in turn might have inherited the symbol from his ancestors. The Tryzub was found impressed into bricks that built the Church of the Tithes in Kiev, into the tiles of the Dormition Cathedral in Volodymyr-Volynskyi, and many other churches, castles, and palaces. There are many examples of it used on ceramics, weapons, rings, medallions, seals, and manuscripts. Oddly, the trident was adopted only in 1917 as the Ukrainian national symbol.
