The Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the four most celebrated Orthodox icons (others include the Vladimir, the Kazan and the Pochaevsk). It is said to be one of the icons painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. Historians assign a date of about 1300, and a Russian artist to it. A further tradition is that the icon miraculously appeared, hovering over a lake, in Russia near Tikhvin in 1383. The appearance of the icon is celebrated on June 26. In the period between 1949 and 2004 the icon was stored in Chicago, USA, having been taken out of Russia for safety by a bishop. It returned to Tikhvin, Russia in 2004. A short prayer in Old Church Slavonic is on the back which celebrates and extolls the brilliance of the Mother of God. Sterling silver (925 purity), gold plate (999 purity). 1¼"x¾". 1 only. $495.
