Russian Orthodoxy
A stunning one-of-a-kind doll from 1992, when the doors and windows of glasnost and perestroika began to open, though long before commercial languor began to set in. The head doll has a painting of Rublev's "Holy Trinity", followed by the Crucifixion, the Annunciation, Christ Pantocrator, the Holy Virgin of Tenderness, Archangel Michael, the first Russian church, an open Gospel with text in Slavonic, a single burning candle and a tiny cross. The nun, or abbess is appealing featured. The colors are richly saturated and the detailing in gold is abundant. The wood is handsomely grained. Brilliant lacquer finish.
C. 1992. From 11" to ¾", 10 nest. $750. More pictures below.
