Festal Icons from St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod.
A tour-de-force icons doll from the early 1990s, when the doors and
windows of glasnost and perestroika began to open, though long before
commercial languor began to set in. Most of the paintings are two-sided
with an additional painting on the top of the doll. The head doll
depicts Oranta, the prayer stance of the Mother of God, her arms
outstretched in prayer. Another large painting depicts Thomas doubting
the Lord Jesus with Philip and Thomas and Matthew as witnesses. The top
shows Christ disappearing into heaven within a mandorla upheld by
angels. All this just on the first doll! Subsequent icons and saints
include the Entry into Jerusalem, the Crucifixion, the Transfiguration,
the Raising of Lazarus, the Deesis, the Holy Trinity and more details as
the paintings become smaller. The artist's paintings invoke the medieval
Novgorod style from 1,000 years ago through the 14th century. Brilliant lacquer finish.
Signed by V. Karnachyov, c. 1993. From 9" to 1", 10 nest. One-of-a-kind.
