Paintings of Boris Kustodiev.
This extraordinary set of dolls reproduces the paintings of Boris
Kustodiev (1878-1927), one of Russia's greatest artists.
The head doll is "Pancake Tuesday/Maslenitsa" (aka "Shrove Tuesday").
This painting is argueably his most famous and was painted in 1919. The
second doll is "Trinity Sunday", painted in 1920. Third is "Easter
Procession" (1915), and the fourth is "Village Scene" from the same
year. Fifth is "Merchant's Wife with Purchases" (1920). The sixth doll
is unusual in that two paintings are reproduced from the RUSSIAN TYPES
series of 1920. "Merchant in a Fur Coat" and "Balloon Seller". The
seventh is "Merchant's Daughter" followed by "Belle" and "Merchant's
Wife", all three from 1915. Tenth doll, eleventh and twelfth are
"Cabbie", "Peasant" and "Water", all drawn from the Types series. Each
doll is meticulously painted and coated with shiny lacquer. Biographical
information of Kustodiev is provided with purchase. By I.V. Shepel,
Rostov-on-the-Don, 1993. 9 1/2" to 1/2", 12 nest. [#AD-SP304] 1
