Matryoshka Dolls From Brest The Russian Shop / Maison Russe 800-778-9404
Brest(formerly Brest-Litovsk) is a city in Belarus at the border with Poland. During the Soviet era, the Brest Matryoshka factory was a prolific production center for unusual nesting doll manufacture. Their dolls are differentiated by the use of birch wood, instead of the more traditional, and softer, linden wood. Musical Clowns. They are dressed in red stocking caps with polka dots. Each has an instrument, starting with a fiddle. a squeeze box, a tin horn, tambourine and mandolin. An interesting period piece. Belarus sticker label, 1990s. 7 nest, 4 1/2". Glossy lacquer finish.
