Bogorodsk Carved and Painted Boxes

On this page, you will find traditional carved boxes from Bogorodsk from the late 1990s. The paintings and compositions are colorful and more complex than the older Zagorsk boxes. Also, the ornamental carving around the boxes is much more complex.

Pokerwork, also known as pyrography, has been around for 500 years as a decorative element. It was in the late 19th century that painting combined with pokerwork became popular. The main composition is drawn in the wood with a heated needle. This picture is painted and coated with a thin lacquer. All these boxes have carved designs around the perimeter and are hinged.

Boxes, such as the one on this page would depict Troika sleigh rides, the countryside, street fairs, and, of course, old Russian architecture. They are titled and signed by the artists. Being labor intensive, they are seldom produced today.
