Zagorsk Carved and Painted Boxes

Here you can find some elegant carved and pain ted boxes from Zagorsk and Bogorodsk from the late 20th century. All are highly collectible and recall a much simpler time. As with much from Russia's recent past, they are getting harder to find in nice condition. We have a very limited quantity. Go Here for A Selection of Newer Painted Boxes.

Pokerwork, also known as pyrography, has been around for 500 years as a decorative element. It was in the late 19th century that painting combined with pokerwork began to become quite popular. The main ornamental composition is drawn in the wood with a heated needle. This picture is then painted in simple or comlex color schemes, then coated with clear lacquer. Many boxes have carved floral designs around the perimeter of the boxes and many are hinged.

Early painting with pokerwork developed at Zagorsk, near Moscow. Common pictures and themes were the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius, with its powerful and ancient fortress walls from the 15th-18th centuries. Other important compositions depicted folk festivals, fairy tales, and village themes.
