Fairy Tales and Legends

Russian Collector Plates

The heyday of collector's plates that were made in Russia coincided with the breakup of the Soviet Union. The very first were The Russian Legends, a series of 12 plates issued in 1988. Immediately a veritable flood of plates emerged as they were cheap and easy to manufacture and aggressivly marketed as investments to a large and overeager group of buyers. Eventually over 100 different plates were manufactured in many different series. The themes mined the Russian culture and the arts and included, among others, THE RUSSIAN LEGENDS (1988), THE FIREBIRD, THE SNOWMAIDEN, THE SEASONS, ORTHODOX CHURCHES, ZHOSTOVO, RUSSIAN ICONS, NUTCRACKER and a few more. At the time, it seemed as if the supply was endless! But eventually, sometime after the year 2000, the market settled down. When the dust had settled, it was ascertained that the earliest plates were produced in large, make that huge, numbers (thus curently the lowest values). Some of the last plates in a few of the series are harder to find as frustrated Bradford Exchange subscribers dropped out before completing the full set. And some of the very last series were produced in small, almost test market-like quantities, which makes them hardest to find. And, last, but not least, simply put - some plates are more attractive than others. After all, collector plates, though once haphazardly marketed as investments, are, in the end, elegant decorative objects meant to be enjoyed and not squirreled away under the bed. Plates on this page are 7¾" in diameter.
