Meissen Swan Service Bread and Butter Plate by Mottahedeh.
The original Swan service was modeled by Meissen's top sculptor - J.
Kandler, which is noted on the back of this small (6 3/4") bread and
butter plate. Kandler chose to use crisp molding on the pure white body
as the main attraction. The plate is shaped and delicately molded with
ribbing to simulate water, in the center of which two high-relief
courting swans are swimming. Highlighted with the crest of Count Bruhl,
delicate flowers, and lavish gilding. It is a combination of transfer
and painting. The pure white kaolin (hard paste porcelain) body shares
many similarities to the Meissen originals. The task of reproducing the
original enameled service was taken up by Mottahedeh in 1973 when Nelson
Rockefeller decided to offer reproductions of some scarce antiques in
his personal collection. The task was difficult, as the original swan
service was known as one of the greatest achievements by Meissen.
Mottahedeh commissioned the noted Portuguese Ceramic firm Vista Alegre,
which was known for its ability to produce fine molding, using
traditional methods and skilled artisans and painters. The plate is is
an excellent example of Vista Alegre's skill at reproducing Meissen's
masterpiece. $95. [#JHS-172] 1 only. Back
