We founded our Russian gift shop and mail-order business in 1972. Word of its existence grew slowly but steadily, and today we are well known throughout North America, Europe, South America, and Australia. We attribute our success to the blend of first hand knowledge of all things Russian with an American connoisseur perspective and business expertise.
We offer unique and unusual Russian gifts: Lomonosov cobalt net porcelain, samovars and teaglass holders, Borzoi, Russian royal objet d'art, Russian Orthodox Icons and crosses, masterpiece oil paintings, matryoshka nesting dolls, Russian lacquer boxes, books, cards and much more. We've been on the internet since 1995 doing our own web design and photography . We make changes all the time to keep our website well up-to-date, and well stocked. We are often asked, "Why is the shop called Maison Russe?" There are a couple of reasons. When we first opened the shop Leonid Brezhnev was the leader of communist Russia. The cold war climate at that time made it necessary for us to come up with a discreet name, something that wouldn't be a "red flag" (no pun intended). Maison Russe was chosen for this reason and for the fact that the Russian royal court in the days of Peter the Great spoke French in order to be "western." Maison Russe is French for "Russian House." Our shop is in picturesque Lisle, Illinois, 20 miles west of Chicago. It's come to be known as the Russian Shop as well as Maison Russe.
